A Solo Journey to Camden, Maine Where the Mountains Kiss the Sea

A Solo Journey to Camden, Maine — Where the Mountains Kiss the Sea

Dearest Kindred Spirits,

There’s something about setting off alone with no rigid itinerary, just a Kindred Spirit travel mug full of coffee, a tiny vase of fresh flowers set into one of the cup holders, and a slow meandering path ahead. In this week’s video, I invite you to join me on a spontaneous two-day solo journey through New England, where drive as few highway roads as possible and follow winding roads up the coast of Maine to a most charming village where the mountains kiss the sea… Camden.

I began the trip under soft gray skies, the kind that make the greens look a bit greener and the ocean even more mysterious. With catmint, dianthus, and cameras in tow, I made my way northward, pausing here and there to admire old homes, pop into antique shops, and soak in the quiet beauty only a non-summer day can provide.

Camden greeted me with a light rain and a rare delight: a parking spot right in the village center. I checked into the Lord Camden Inn, a quaint and comfortable stay with a view of the little river below. It wasn’t the grand oceanfront hotel I had originally considered, but it was just right.

The town was peacefully uncrowded, and I spent the afternoon poking into shops, finding inspiration in black petunias and deep ocean blue shutters, vintage plates and old paintings, each item a whisper from another time. I even stumbled across a company called Second Story Builders carefully salvaging architectural pieces from a historic home. What a name! It made me think about the stories we carry and those we choose to build upon.

Later, I enjoyed a quiet cocktail and a light supper alone, with a book and my thoughts for company. I picked up A Short Guide to a Happy Life in town and read it cover to cover. Fitting, I think, for a trip like this.

On day two, I visited the venue for my stepson’s upcoming wedding, the Samoset Resort, where we worked on wedding details, napkin folds, and a touch of florals. Then, I detoured to Cabot Mill Antiques, a beautiful space filled with treasures and curiosities, the perfect place for an afternoon wander.

By the end of my journey, as the rain lifted and the sun filtered through the trees, I drove home beneath a sky brushed with hope. It was one of those trips that wasn’t wildly eventful, but quietly soul-stirring.

I hope you’ll enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed filming it. Perhaps it will inspire you to plan your own slow journey, one that invites beauty, simplicity, and a bit of old New England magic to unfold at its own pace.

With fondness and a steaming cup of coffee or tea by my side,
Linda
